The Turner Brown Band (USA/Australia)

The Turner Brown Band, is a joint Australia/USA musical collaboration between Australian slide guitarist and music producer Dom Turner (of awarded blues act Backsliders fame) and Ohio-based Sacred Steel lap-slide guitar as well as vocal sensation Nikki D Brown. The result is a merging of Nikkis southern style US gospel Sacred Steel guitar and vocals with Doms blues-based sounds forming a dueling slide guitar eclectic and uplifting gospel-blues musical feast

Nikki D Brown, born into a Church-based lap-slide guitar tradition known as Sacred Steel, learnt the instrument first-hand from myriad steel guitar masters including Ruth Durdel, Yolondo Ramsey, Del Grace and Henry Tyson, melding them all into her unique and wildly gritty guitar sound. Her powerful vocals and performance has developed over a lifetime of gospel singing, resulting in a powerfully rich, raspy soul-gospel vocal style delivered with impeccable flare and flamboyancy.

Renowned Australian blues-based slide-guitarist and vocalist, Dom Turner has spent more than 30 years touring the festival circuit with Backsliders as well as various musical collaborations including Phil Wiggins and Dom Turner. Joining Dom and Nikki are her sisters Gloria Brown (rhythm guitar and vocals) and cousin Tomika Webb (drums and vocals) who share the same deep musical heritage and love of infectious gospel-soul music.

Taikoz: Seven Flowers
more_vert
close

The Flower is the Mind, the seed is technique. Zeami Fushikaden (The Transmission of Style and the Flower)

Noh playwright and theoretician Zeami wrote these words in his once secret 15th Century treatise Fushikaden. In the first chapter, Zeami describes the seven periods of an artists life and work which, in terms of Noh, begins at the tender age of 7! In a happy coincidence, Taikoz and guest artists closely associated with the ensemble embrace all seven of Zeamis ages of the artist. And so, from youngster to elder, Seven Flowers explores the many faceted phases of an artists life and work.

Featuring new works by Swiss composer Fritz Hauser (Shong), Western Australias Stuart James (Kinabuhi | Kamatayon) and Taikozs Artistic Director Ian Cleworth (The Place Where Nothing Is Done), Seven Flowers combines spectacular taiko drumming with beautiful song, dynamic movement, colourful percussion, and an evocative stage design by artists Bart Groen and Emma Hack.

Premium tickets include a post-show drink and Meet and Greet in the Function Room. Only 50 available.

This vibrant musical world is explored through recordings of early music, rare instruments, printed scores, and remarkable stories of people creating home through song.

Step into grand houses, humble cottages, vast landscapes, pubs and churches, and discover the soundtrack of early Sydney.

See and hear the earliest transcriptions of Aboriginal songs.
Follow the story of Australias first piano as it made its way from Britain to Elizabeth Farm in Parramatta.
Discover the story of the Murray family and their musical possessions, hauled by horse-drawn carriage over the Blue Mountains.

On display for the first time in Australia are albums of music hand-copied by Jane Austen, revealing her musical tastes and practices. These are similar to those brought to Australia by immigrants in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Surprising, moving, entertaining. The fascinating world of music in early NSW is revealed here for the first time as a place of melodious complexity.
